The Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, together with the Electricity Regulations 1997, make you responsible for ensuring a safe environment for both patients and staff. The only way to be sure that the electrical equipment in your practice is safe to use is to have it routinely tested.
Which standard?
A number of electrical contractors now offer safety testing for electrical appliances. The procedures used for testing appliances in general usage are unsuitable for medical electrical appliances. Electricians who do not usually work in this area may not be aware of the special requirements for medical appliances. You need to be certain that your electrical equipment is being tested to AS/NZ3551 specifications.

Testing Information
Prudent risk management requires that you address the issue of electrical safety. The best way to do this is through a routine electrical safety testing programme.
